Question One woman discovers her traditional role as wife and mother to be a lie whereas the other counts the cost of her success as a modern career woman How would you stage a key scene from A Dolls House and Top Girls that contributes to or highlights each heroines realization of theses issues Answer In the first part of this essay I will begin by pretending to be a director in portraying the two scenes from both plays A Doll House by Henrik Ibsen and Top Girls by Caryl Churchill In each play I will talk about how the settings are being determined the use of costumes the different intonations of the characters their facial expression and the rationale behind each settings For both plays I will be focusing on act 3 In addition I will also analyze issues on how a woman discovers her traditional role as wife and mother to be a lie whereas the other counts the cost of hers success as a modern career woman The Doll House written by Henrik Ibsen is an astonishing family play of how a man dominates his wife and treats his wife merely as a doll The title suggested Nora Torvald that she is indeed living in a house where Torvald her husband has treated her like a doll to be played and admired The struggle to play the role of a devoted wife and a caring mother can be seen throughout the play Ibsen does magnificent work by painting a bleak picture of the sacrificial role held by women of all economic classes in his society In general a play can be approached and be interpreted in many different ways Each performance or act is largely dependent on the director He being the leader has to decide on the characters costumes the lightings the background arrangements and other accessories Each performance is said to be unique The costumes
