Florida during the Civil War was important to American history The election of 1860 and the debate over slavery had lead Florida to secede from the United States This allowed for anyone in the state of Florida to own slaves without any restrictions Many battles were fought during the Civil War Even the city of Tampa played its own role in the war however the bloodiest battle ever fought in Florida was the battle of Olustee leaving many dead captured or wounded Florida believed in slavery and believed they had no reason to contribute to the Union any longer The election of 1860 caused a great challenge to the United States Wynne 17 Debating over slavery had torn the Democratic Party into Northern and Southern Parties leading to the formation of the Republican Party Wynne 17 When the time came to elect the next president of the United Sates Florida was one of the states that voted in favor of John C Breckinridge from the Southern Democratic Party Wynne 17 Florida did not vote in favor of Abraham Lincoln mostly because of his name not appearing on any of the ballots Wynne 17 Abraham Lincoln went on to win the presidential race with the support he had gained in the Northern states Wynne 17 Floridians were thrilled to hear Carolina had seceded from the United States Wynne 18 They hoped for Florida to follow in its footsteps immediately Wynne 18 Others delegates believed in letting the situation play out farther before taking any action Floridians agreed they had no longer a place in Union control Wynne 18 Floridians wanted to elect representatives for their state secession convection Wynne 18 The representatives chosen went to begin their important deliberations scheduled to begin on January 3 1861
