The no child left behind act has now been in effect since January 23 2001 and was proposed by George W Bush This act has required that all public schools receive federal funding to administer a state-wide standardized test annually to all students This act is the building block of my topic which are the effects these achievement tests have on the students and teachers in the elementary years of school and how they can change These effects can be seen as two ways one being harmful and the other being helpful A few weak sides of these achievement tests are teachers lowering goals and teaching to the test the test cannot cover all areas of education and quite honestly some students just dont take tests well However there are strong points of this too like holding teachers and schools accountable providing schools with data to maintain strengths and overcome weaknesses and the tests are not graded with bias Furthermore after reconsidering these effects do we need to reevaluate these tests or get rid of them completely Although standardized testing is there for the correct intentions there are significant flaws as well as notable merits of the systemSo people may be thinking who actual wants to change these tests or get rid of them Well it just so happens to be that the teachers themselves want this system changed A national survey hosted from Scholastic and the Gates Foundation asked more than 10000 teachers about their school classes and how performance should be measured Dwyer Only seven percent believed in standardized test being essential The majority or 62 percent believed that quizzes test observations summaries and reviews are more essential to the students achievements One teacher from New Mexico said There needs to be less emphasis on mastering a test and more emphasis on mastering the skills and higher-level concepts in the core subjects Dwyer Many schools are trying to get away
