Individuals in todays world often have increased nervous tensions and levels of anxiety and need to develop more effective ways of dealing with common everyday stress This stress can include any situation place or person that sparks the individuals emotional charge The stimulant can be as simple as riding in an elevator or walking in a large crowd to visiting the doctor or dentist In addition if a person is going through a more significant experience such as a death of a loved one a job loss or a financial problem it may be even more important to know and practice relaxation techniques to overcome the stress Life stresses themselves dont necessarily change but how a person deals with them can make all the difference Practicing relaxation exercises can help relieve stress reducing a persons risk of stress related mental and physical illness Goldman 1999 p 74 The techniques teach people to deal with the problem more effectively They help make thoughts more calm and peaceful and they also help build self-esteem and self-confidence There are many different types of relaxation techniques for people to choose from making it easy for each individual to decide what best fits them One widely used technique is breathing exercises because deep breathing can be done anytime or anywhere The exercise of controlled breathing uses the diaphragm along with the abdominal muscles It provides extra oxygen to the blood and causes the body to release endorphins which are naturally occurring hormones that re-energize and promote relaxation Goldman Johnson 2 1999 pp 74-75 Whenever one feels stressed they should simply stop and breathe deeply for a few minutes Another technique that is used for relaxation is visualization This therapeutic method focuses on peaceful thoughts to create pictures in ones mind of a beautiful place It also deals with the visualization of two colors blue and red Visualizing the color blue lessens the fight and flight response during a stressful situation
