My family is rooted to the land my ancestors were farmers whose livelihood defined the American Dream They formed the backbone of the United States Economy and were responsible for providing the nourishment necessary to sustain our nation Both of my parents grew up on family farms located in Central North Dakota only 50 miles from the Canadian border Early in my life and every summer to this day I have the privilege of living in rural America My life when I am in Olathe Kansas compared to when I am in Hamburg North Dakota is different because in the country life is simple its easier to connect with nature and its easier to achieve a sense of autonomy Hamburg North Dakota is a small town located close to the Canadian border Less than 10 people live in this small town that consists of two elevators a small mom and pop butcher shop and the Risovi ranch airstrip Noticeably no internet connections or cell service can be found in the town This takes away the usefulness of electronics and gives an incentive to put them down and experience life the way life is meant to be I honestly dont mind this forced disconnection of my cell phone ceasing the constant blinking vibrating and notifications of arriving social media interactions or texts This utopia is a sharp contrast to the 21st century lifestyle of the average city slicker When I am in Olathe I feel the constant tether to electronics strengthen and I hardly spend an hour in the day not staring at a high definition LCD screen Instantaneously connected to 600 friends on Facebook 50 of which I cannot even remember who they are Country life is simpler because everyone knows everyone in 50 miles since in the city that is purely impossibleRural America also gives you a sense of freedom because you are removed from the chains of the concrete jungle known as suburbia
