Christina Huggins night Mother After reading the play night Mother by Marsha Norman I have come to the conclusion due to my response to this piece that the main theme of this play is loneliness and hopelessness To me this was quite obvious because of the plays main topic suicide Suicide is a great tragedy for all involved including the victim and the people left behind Perhaps it is because I have almost been one of those left behind that this piece is particularly moving to me In a way I feel almost as much for Jessie as for Mama When most people read this play they will most likely feel sorry for Mama because she goes through this ordeal but what is important to remember is that Jessie went through this ordeal too but for much longer What this story doesnt focus on as much is the suffering that Jessie has gone through prior to this time As Mama says Theres nothing real sad going on right now If it was after your divorce or something that would make sense But Jessie has already told us that she has been thinking about this Off and on ten years The majority of people who have ever committed suicide or tried have been suffering for a long time It is truly rare for someone to come up with an idea like that and go through with it on a whim This is what makes me feel for Jessie also This is not to say that Mama isnt going through quite an ordeal as well I know Ive been there myself but it is important to not make her the only victim I have been fortunate enough to find a video of this play and was able to watch it It went almost perfectly along with the play with very few changes Honestly seeing it is more powerful than
