In Arna Bontemps A Summer Tragedy we were introduce to a old couple Jeff and Jennie Patton This couple had no one left in the world but each other so to relieve each other of the burden of taking care of one another they made a profound decision to end their lives Jeff was a share farmer hes recovering from a stroke and hes afraid of what would happen to his wife is he get another stroke Jennie is blind and has a wasted dead- leaf appearance shes also as scrawny and gnarled as a string bean She also used to smile at her husband more when she had teeth After talking about there future they decided to end their life instead of becoming burden to each other They decided the best way to do this was to drive their car into the river On the way to the river Jennie notice her husband was trembling he was frightened about the trip She asked him if he was afraid and he assures her he wasnt She didnt believe him and tries to assure him he shouldnt be afraid and their decision was the right one All the while her own fear was creeping up on her During the ride to the river many taughts were going through Jeff mind He taught about his children He taught about the pain he and Jennie couldnt forget after losing all five of their grown children within two year The lost of their children was the main reason for their decision He taught about his own strength his job and his friend He taught about his trip fifty years ago when he went to Mardi Gras with his friend He taught about how young he was then and how old he is now and what would happen to Jennie if he get another stroke and leave her alone to take care of himself With that
