Catching Sense In this article Suzanne Carothers discusses how black mother-daughter relationships are so important and that the children learn from what they are taught The daughters in this study showed the utmost respect for their mothers they viewed their mothers not only as a parent but also as a friend and a teacher One of the more challenging parts of raising a black child in a black neighborhood was that they did not get very many chances to integrate with people from white communities Parents tried to teach their children to treat white people just as they would anybody else and actually had to teach them not to be scared of them after all with the history that they knew of white people it would be rather easy to be afraid of them or have strong feelings of hate towards them They would have to teach their children to keep an open mind towards things and if they did they would succeed in life I grew up in a very diverse community where racism and discrimination where a very minimal problem to me I think this is partially due to the fact that at my house I was never taught to discriminate against people and was just taught to treat everybody equally From grade school through high school I became close to people of a variety of different races People must see past the whole color issue and just look to see who the person is on the inside When I entered college this atmosphere is far less diverse than what I was used to however to some the whole environment was a complete change People had grown up in communities that had a very minimal amount of minorities and didnt know how to act around different races Their parents also had there own opinions about races other than their own that they expressed openly in their household If a child is constantly
