The Grapes of Wrath talks about the struggle that plagued farmers in theMidwest during the great depression of the 1930s Throughout the storywe learn about the lives of a fictional family called the Joads alsoknown as okies poor migrant farmers Steinbeck accurately portraysthe lives of the migrants and puts the thoughts and feelings intoperspective of not just the Joads but also the Okies in general Thewriting style in the book portrays animals and innanimate objects assymbols of characters in the story Steinbeck leaves the reader thinkingabout the deeper meaning behind some of the most symbollic things in thebook such as the dust the animals sun road monster The symbolism inthe story Grapes of Wrath can convey the true meaning behind GeorgeSteinbecks story In the beginning of the story we read a lot about the significance ofthe dust storm The dust represents the oncoming demise of their presentlife This unstoppable force will change the lives of the farmers asthey know it and sadly enough it cannot be avoided Over time the dustbegan to block the view of the stars and sun No matter how hard thefarmers would try to stop the dust from entering their house it wasimpossible and no matter what the people did they could not escape it The dust covered over everything once special to the Joad family Notonly does the dust represent the hardships the families of the Midwesthad to overcome but also the tests and struggles they were about toendure The dust also represents the strength of the Joad family and theOkies in general The dust forces families rise to the occasion and makethe most out of what they have even when the dust makes them feelhopeless The dog in Grapes of Wrath never received a name and wasnt close to thefamily but was also considered a part of the Joad family The animals inGrapes of Wrath act like humans and the humans act like animals Whathappens to the animals
