Anorexia Nervosa Anorexia Nervosa is an illness that mainly affects adolescent girls but it can also occur in boys People with anorexia are obsessed with being thin The most common features are loss of weight and change in their behaviour The weight loss may become severe and life threatening There personality changes will be those of increasing seriousness and introversion and an increasing tendency to become obsessional Victims of anorexia will usually begin to lose contact with their friends and will regress and appear to lose their confidence Victims may also become less assertive less argumentative and more dependent They believe they are fat even though they are very thin Anorexia isnt just a problem with food or weight it is a attempt to use food or weight to deal with emotional problems Anorexia Nervosa is an illness of several causes The weight loss that triggers the illness is often the result of a very normal weight lose diet of the sort that is typical of many adolescent girls but may be the result of unhappiness or illness Those who become ill often share the characteristics and these are thought to make then vulnerable The personalities of these girls tend to be conformist compliant and hard working These traits are usually accentuated by the disorder The families of anorexics are mainly high achieving with high expectations of their children They often seem to discourage individual growth and encourage conformity There is frequently a failure to express emotional issues There are often a lot of pressures such as exams when the illness starts and stress arising from difficulties in relationships with friends are also common The reason some people get anorexia isnt known People with anorexia may believe they would be happier and more successful if they were thin They want everything in their lives to be perfect People who have the disorder are usually good students they
