Americas Promise Why do we have thirteen-year-old mothers Why do we have school shootings Why do we have high school dropouts Why are some of Americas youth loosing hope and belief in themselves Why arent more of Americas adults asking themselves these questions People of every sector of American life should be more concerned with building the character and competence of our nations youth by providing ongoing relationships with caring adults safe places with structured activities during non-school hours and marketable skills through effective education First of all we would not have attention starved teens if more relationships with caring adults were available Maybe there is not a lot we can do for the older troubled teens of today but America can learn for her mistakes and apply the lessons learned toward our future Starting today each and every abled adult or older teen should begin building true friendships with the unfriended If there was someone how really cared not just pretended that they cared one would be more motivated to succeed because of the fear of disappointment Looking back on my childhood I can observe and differentiate my peers whose parent or other caretaker cared about their schoolwork and those whos didnt In the long run the children who had someone at home to make sure they were quizzed over that first grade spelling list are doing outstandingly better in high school than those whos guardians never even knew about the test Not only are the grown-up first graders doing great with their schoolwork but they are also very motivated about their future after high school Next there should be more safe places with structured activities during non-school hours Sure its the law that every youth are in school but is anybody concerned with where they go from there Maybe theyre not athletically inclined or are just too young to even attend a sport practice but we must keep these children involved
