In a New York Times article Dan Zak discussed the new addiction andpreoccupation our generation has with taking selfies and theconstant posting of these images to the internet The use of Facebookand Instagram has been overridden by selfies and an indulgence thatpeople use to feel self worth and has created a new way to conform tosociety In the article psychologist Sarah J Gervais was quoted sayingSuch portraiture on social media is as good for self-empowerment as itis for self-objectification The term selfie has become so popularin the past few years that it has been made Oxfords word of the yearwith a 17000 percent increase since last year giving us a new way tolabel our fascination with the self Zak 2013 The author speaks aboutour societies new obsession with the self and how selfies allow us toshare every detail of our lives and express the worth we find inourselves and others There were two perspectives in this article onebeing that selfies are a new way to conform to our narcissistic societyand second is that Instagram offers resistance to the pressures to beperfect we face from traditional media Related to the present articleour class discussed the topic of sexism and the impact gendermicroagressions has on both genders Looking at this article and thecourse material there is much overlap between the restrictive genderroles denial of sexism sexual objectification and benevolent sexism The present article relates to the discussion of the objectification ofboth genders but mainly on men and womens self expression and femalesattempt to escape from the pressures of gender microaggressions Withthe new forms of social media rising there has been an increase inself-obsession and preoccupation with taking pictures of oneself knownas selfies There are a variety of selfies ranging from the dorkysexy drunk or the popular duck face that aid in the objectification ofwomen by allowing young girls to be judged when they appear less thanperfect Like the topics discussed in class and the film shown thegender
