Yasujir Ozu is among the greatest directors in the history of silentfilms in Japan and in the world of cinematography Bordwell Kristin388 In his film collection Ozu has fifty-three films which includeshis early age short comedian films and later films with more seriousthemes Wood 112 In his films the dominant theme is mostly therelationships between generations in marriage and families Among hisoutstanding works are Late Spring 1949 Early Summer 1951 and TokyoStory 1953 In these films Ozu engaged tatami shots style ofcinematography in which he shoots his movies from the position below theeye level of the characters Wood 122 This technique sensationalizedhis films and drew the audience in to a close engagement with thecharacters feelings by bringing the viewer to the nearest vicinity ofthe characters emotions In this essay the use of the tatami shotstechnique will be evaluated by examples from three Ozu films LateSpring 1949 Early Summer 1951 and Tokyo Story 1953 Late Spring 1949 is a drama film directed by Yasujiro Ozu and is basedon the short story Father and Daughter by Kazuo Hirotsu Bordwell Kristin 394 The film is starring Chishu Ryu an actress who take partin a lot of Ozus films and Setsuko Hara another frequent character inOzus films Wood 119 The most remarkable aspect of the Late Springfilm is the use of tatami shots a camera technique where the directorshoots his actors from a low position The use of tatami shots in theLate Spring film enables the audience to engage with the emotions of thecharacters throughout the film For example the scene in which Noriko visits her friend Aya in herhome In this scene Noriko is in a sitting position and the camerashoots Aya at a slightly higher position from which the audience cansee Aya looking down towards her friend The scene is shot in a way thatthe camera in both pictures is low but the degrees are different Theshot controls the way the audience should follow and analyze
