During the tragedy of the Holocaust over five million Jews were uprooted from their lives and sent to concentration work or death camps In the memoir All but My Life by Gerda Weissmann Klein Gerda tells the story of her experience during the Holocaust In recalling her first experience in Bolkenhain Gerda writes People looked at us as though they had not expected us to be human Driven by prejudice and hate the Nazis succeeded in dehumanizing the Jews by taking away their individuality portraying the Jews as the enemy and making them feel insignificant weak and unsafe Hitler suffocated the individuality of the Jews On arrival at camp they each received tattoos Each tattoo was a combination of numbers which signified who they were Gerda writes I was given a number-895A- and told to dress and go to my bunk In taking away their names they took away their ability to be known apart from everyone else In essence it proved to them that they were all the same Also the Jews belongings were taken away their hair was frequently shaved to prevent lice their clothing was removed and they were forced to march naked through camp Gerda says We were told to undress completely I was rebellious and furious but did what I was told We were then marched into the dining hall They were left shameful and heartbroken with no possible way to express themselves Hitler crushed their self-esteem and individuality using conformity and humiliation throughout the camps The Nazis used media to target the Jews Hitler identified the power of propaganda and used it to turn the Germans against the Jews News reports cartoons and posters portrayed the Jews as dishonest dirty and less than normal Gerda writes I looked toward a large red sign with bold white letters Dogs and Jews not allowed to enter The Germans began to see the Jews in their neighborhoods and cities as described
