I seek to join Teach for America because I believe that the quality ofeducation children receive should not be determined by factors such as raceor income-level I subscribe to the notion that despite seeminglyinsurmountable structural roadblocks to students who are disadvantaged thateach of them has the potential for incredible strength and resiliency thatan engaged and passionate educator can foster I say this because I know itfirst hand I grew up in a household where my mother suffered with alifelong battle with addiction and years of unemployment where povertymeant that I would avoid going to friends birthday parties because wecould not afford to buy them gifts I was able to take refuge in educationbecause I had teachers who believed in my ability to thrive despite thechaos at home The perseverance and love for learning that was instilledfor me as a young man allowed me to push forward in a variety of difficultsituations I faced in my future the death of my mother clinicaldepression coming out as a gay man and returning to school complete mybachelors degree Due to these experiences I now seek to be the kind ofeducator that engenders determination despite incredible challenges just asI was given that gift as a child While cultivating resiliency would be the emotional underpinning of myteaching style I understand that children also need to build skills andcapacities that will allow them to be successful in their futures if theachievement gap is to be closed I think the most crucial skill I couldimpart as a corps member would be to nurture critical thinking in mystudents by not just explaining the what of a situation but urging mystudents to ask the how and why I would also use any opportunitiespossible to incorporate technology use in the classroom to help breach thedigital divide and make students comfortable and excited with emergingtechnology Finally I would work with students to identify their
