In December 2010 NESTA The National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts released a report as result of an event hosted by the company in London that discussed The Power and Possibilities of Big Data The report described big data as the the term applied to the rapid growth of data that has result from more automated collection methods and greater capacity for storage and processing 1 As per the report own predictions the words big and rapid do not even start to qualify the growth in question The expected future increase of global data production is of an annual compound of 60 of new and original material which represents a forecast of 125 billion terabytes to be generated by the end of 2011 much more than the 287 exabytes of 2007 Indeed only the amount of data generated in 2010 by computers cameras research labs and smartphones surpassed the capacity of storage technologies available in 2007 Experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN for example generate 40 terabytes of information every second much more than it is currently possible to store or analyse by humans or machines these days Even in terms of consumer generated content through digital media the numbers are slightly more conceivable but still impalpable with more than 750 million subscribers Facebook users share 30 billion pieces of online content daily while 490 million youtubers generate 48 hours of original material per minute or 8 years of video everyday In fact more video content is uploaded on youtube in a 60 day period than the three major American television companies ABC CBS NBC created in 60 years 2The velocity and the volume of data-production is not only exponential but also unpredictable The proliferation of new technological affordances as sensors increasingly automated affordable and small - computer generated communications geo-located devices and ubiquity computing enables a de-centralized logic of passive and active but mostly massive content production
