Imagine a family sitting in their kitchen eating a family dinner and all of a sudden their house starts to fill with poisonous gas Suddenly they can not breath and the remaining seconds of their lives are spent watching their beloved family struggle for their last breath This is what happened to thousands of innocent Kurdish people from 1987 - 1988 and all of these deaths can be tied back to Saddam Hussein and his Al-Anfal Campaign Hussein headed Eight Al Anfal Campaigns which were attacks on the Kurdish people Due to the Kurdish resistance of Iraq and their involvement with Iran during the Iran Iraq war Saddam wanted the Kurdish population eliminated Saddam Husseins attacks were not justified because the dropping of gas on the Kurdish people was deemed an act of genocide as well as many war crimes Saddam Hussein was born in Tikrit Iraq on April 28 1937 As a child he attended a nationalist school in Baghdad During college he decided to join the Baath Party The Biography Channel Website 1 The Baath party is a socialist political group in Iraq As a member of the Baath party Saddam as well as other members attempted to assassinate the dictator of Iraq and overthrow the Iraqi government which would put the Baath party at the head of the government However their assassination attempt was a failure and Saddam was forced to flee the country in October of 1959 He escaped to Egypt and while he was hiding he spent his time there attending law school After hiding for about four years Saddam returned to Iraq due to the overthrow of the Iraqi government When all was said and done in 1976 Ahmad Hassan Al-Bakr became dictator with Saddam as his deputy Saddam continued to rise in political power and when Al- Bakr resigned his position as the leader of the Iraqi people in 1979 Saddam was chosen as the new dictator However
