They Puritans believed in short that they held in their steady hands the candle that would light the world We have inherited this belief and it has helped and hurt us It helped them with the discipline it gave them They were a dedicated folk by and large and they had to be to survive the life they had chosen or were born into in this country Miller 168 In this quote Arthur Miller states that the Puritans were born with a belief that they were doing what was best for the community in order to survive in a fixed society that were taught a biased outlook on what was right and wrong A few of the majority in fact were doing what was correct The archetypical theory merely states that there are basic and widely used concepts more specifically characters throughout literature in which derived from the human unconscious and have been used in various cultures throughout history An abundance of character archetypes can be illustrated in the play but only a few of those models were interested in doing what was righteous during mass hysteria that blinded many characters who followed the wrong path during the Salem Witch Trials In The Crucible Miller uses archetypes throughout the characters journey in keeping their moral dignity Those archetypes were the tragic hero the evil figure with the ultimately good heart and the martyr Arthur Miller uses the archetype of the tragic hero to be more specific an unfaithful husband in the play This ill-fated character is portrayed in the adulterous John Proctor It was the infidelity that was the downfall of the protagonist Although Proctor committed a heinous sin in the eyes of Puritan society he pursues a path of forgiveness and redemption by publically revealing his affair with Abigail Williams Proctor proclaims But I waited and like a Christian I confessed Confessed Miller 194 If John would have kept his affair a
