The Skeleton Coast of Africa is located along the Atlantic coast of the Nambia Desert The Skeleton Coast was named for the dozens of shipwrecks that litter the shore This twenty-five mile strip of land has been protecting wildlife since 1971 There is n assortment of animals along the Skeleton Coast ranging from the lizard to the wild elephant To find wild elephants in a desert is most unusual and the only other place than Nambia where you can find elephants in the desert is in the Sahara Desert These elephants have been in the Nambia Desert since as early as 1793 when Western explorers re rted their first sightings of the elephants Also there have been many sights discovered that were made thousands of years ago with pictures that show elephants Finding resources that are necessary for survival have decreased the number of wild elephants along the coast In 1970 there were three hundred elephants in South Africa but fourteen years later there were only seventy left The water that the eleph ts so badly need every three to four days is hard to come by An African zoologist named PJ Viljoen has spent five years tracking the elephants This is his version of the elephants search for water They didnt mill about they immediately headed o in a new direction They knew where the next water hole was even if they hadnt visited it for a year In this article there was a picture of wild elephants bathing in a water hole The wrinkled gray animals were splashing around in the deep blue water The whole pond was surrounded by tall green grass Looking up the hill that the pond was in there w e sparse patches of green vegetation but mostly there were hills of tan-colored sand in the distance Elephants unlike humans can handle environmental stress Although in the early 1980s a terrible drought did slow their birthrate Only
