The Badlands are 244303 acres of plains and jagged rocky terrain It was in 1978 that this National Monument of South Dakota was deemed a National Park The Sioux Native Americans called it maku sika which roughly translates into land bad The first white men to travel across this seemingly impassible region were French-Canadian trappers They described it as les mauvaises terres traverser or bad land to travel across The badlands have been forming for over 530 million years but the majority of it formation in the past 75 Approximately 75 million years ago Earths climate was warmer and a shallow sea covered most of the Great Plains This sea glistened with life The bottom of that sea is now visible in the badlands It appears as a grayish black sedimentary rock called Pierre shale This layer is a rich source of fossils This is because fossils sank to the bottom of the sea when they died and became buried under the sediments They badlands are bizarre landforms masterpieces of water and wind sculpture They are deserts of a special kind where rain is infrequent the bare rocks are poorly consolidated and relatively uniform in their resistance to erosion and runoff water washes away large amounts of sediment On average the White River Badlands of South Dakota erode one inch per year It seems as though the individual elements defy gravity Erosion is so rapid that the landforms can change perceptibly overnight as a result of a single thunderstorm At Badlands National Park weird shapes are etched into a plateau of soft sediments and volcanic ash revealing colorful bands of flat-lying strata The stratification adds immeasurably to the beauty of each scene binding together all of its diverse parts Viewed horizontally individual beds are traceable from pinnacle to pinnacle mound to mound ridge to ridge across the intervening ravines Viewed from above the band curves in and out of the valley like contour
