The Black Plague was a massive epidemic that struck Europe in the 14th century The epidemic was spread from port to port and then overland by fleas on rats The plague was believed to have come from Asia and brought to Europe after the a siege in Crimea after a plague broke out there when the besiegers who would catapult their dead diseased into the city The outbreak killed anywhere from 30-60 of Europes total population that died But religious fervor and fear caused persecution of minorities for example the JewsThe episode of the Black Plague in the European Catholic religion was extremely focused on the idea that God created this plague because he wanted to punish his people because of all the sins they committed There were two interpretations by European historians on the Christian view of the Black Plague Some thought that the plague was a pestilential miasma some thought god was punishing them and some started not believing in godThe pestilential miasma was a theory that there was a cloud that held the plague This is how European officials determined the disease was contagious For this reason this is why most European cities were under lockdown and took precocious procedures to keep the disease from spreading This idea was influential during the Middle Ages as an explanation for contagionwhy some contracted plague while others did not The concept of bad air was the main explanation for disease in general and the plague in particular during the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance However the term miasma was was not used during this time Instead Medieval writers and historians referred to corruption of the air pestilential air or putrefaction of the airThe flagellants were people who tortured themselves because they thought the Black Death was caused by God and God was punishing them for there sins They were extremists which grew intensely during the opening years of the Black
