Throughout history people have always been fighting a losing battle against fate Hunger sadness and death were the feelings of desperate people during the early twentieth century People suffered through the era known as the Great depression It was considered the most universal financial collapse that arose in 1929 and continued until about 1939 The iconic images remain with us apple sellers by their pushcarts tenant farmers in their shacks families trudging through dust clouds swirling over parched land To this day the period remains our byword for economic crisis a historical marker of what could happen again Dickstein 3-4There were many factors that lead to the downfall of America during that time It was a time with blood sweat and lots of tears Many marches rebellions and strikes were triggered from the Great Depression and the setting around it As generations grow up they seem to become more unaware of history every year Through oral history it is possible to record just what it was like back then The interviewee Ms Nellie Marie Mitchell agreed to think back in history and describe what life was like to live through such a decimated period Miss Nellie Marie Mitchell was born in 1924 in Livingston Missouri She was nine years old when the Great Depression came to take her familys farm and all their money with it During the 1930s the dust bowl phenomenon took over the farms and ranches across western America forcing landowners to live off of what little they had Nellie recalls that hobos would come to their house and beg for food and shelterMitchell 2013 Her family being the middle class citizens they were decided to take in the homeless people Her mother fed them and her father agreed to let them sleep in the barns as long as they did not smoke This demonstrates the drawn togetherness of the people during these times They knew that if they did not
