Art and the Environment Casper David Friedrichs Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog and Jonathan Fergusons What Type of Forest do You Prefer Casper David Friedrich was born on September 5 1774 in Greifswald Germany He resided in his hometown until 1798 when he attended Copenhagen Academy for the Arts When he had completed his scholastic career he settled in Dresden As a child he endured many hardships which would influence his art and ultimately his later life As a young boy he faced very difficult and trying issues His mother died at a young age and Friedrich was deeply affected and scarred Friedrich has involuntarily picked up a greater appreciation of death and a great respect for God This appreciation became more and more apparent in his art Friedrich sees death as rebirth a cycle of renewal and in nature this is in harmony His respect for God translates into a respect for the World in which we all live He believes that by respecting what God has created we are in turn respecting God himself Conversely by disrespecting nature we are also disrespecting God the creator Friedrich lived in Dresden after he graduated from Copenhagen Academy and it was in that very town where he breathed his last It was May 7 1840 he was sixty-five 65 years old In Friedrichs painting Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog he intended to illustrate mans solidarity with nature or mans ideal relationship with nature and the environment To understand Friedrichs comment of the environment his life must be put into context He lived during the Industrial Revolution where cities were being transformed into dirty run-down holesfor lack of a better word covered in soot from the near-by pollutionis factories He did not appreciate his beautiful cities being run down He longed for a return to a more idyllic serene landscape one in which wasnt clogged with run down buildings
