The Coming of Manhood I have many fond memories of the great outdoors during my childhood My grandparents are commonly part of the wonderful times during my earlier years I often find myself reminiscing about fishing trips spent with my grandfather and grandmother in the summer and how it was a wonderful way to share special moments with each other I recall the great excitement I felt overhearing plans concerning a special camping trip and the long enjoyable rides in the motor home They were good times but none of the memories are as great as my first hunting season when I made my first kill a beautiful white tailed deer I can remember it as if it were yesterday Every year my grandparents leave for a week in November to go deer hunting in central West Virginia I always wanted to go but I was told I was too young However this year was different I turned fifteen and my grandfather told me I was about to reach my manhood I was going hunting with my grandparents I was extremely excited My grandfather made a special shopping trip for me He purchased a hunting suit boots gloves and other hunting accessories to keep me warm in the cold winter weather My most valued possession is an old 3006 Springfield rifle my grandfather gave me It is not the most handsome looking rifle in the world There is a little rust on the barrel and dings in the wood but I was proud to carry it on my shoulder and I still carry it today As the weeks went by the opening day of the deer season came closer I could feel my anticipation growing Finally the big week came and we packed up the camper with food and our hunting necessities then we headed off to the great outdoors Once we arrived at our campsite we packed a lunch for the next
