World War One has been said to have been one of the most bloody as well as the most pointless wars of all time The conflict ultimately arose in 1914 from the assassination of a mostly nameless and unknown Archduke Franz Ferdinand who was the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire The Great War resulted in Germany and its partners defeat and their unconditional surrender to the allied forces The conflict recorded 8538315 military personelle dead with many more causalities as well as a number of civilian losses Also there was enormous property and economic damage done to all of the countries involved The War was formally ended with the infamous Treaty of Versailles which given the goals of the leaders involved was designed to punish the Germans As well the harsh conditions and internal flaws of the treaty set the stage for another international military conflict Each of the major political figures involved in the creation of the treaty had his own political agenda when they approached the problem of the settlement The main players were France Britain The United States and Italy all of whom had different ideas and opinions which arose in a clash France had been a long time German rival and without any remorse Georges Clemenceau the French Prime Minister wanted Germany to accept all blame force complete German disarmament and he felt that Germany must return Alsace-Lorraine to France which had been taken by Germany in 1871 He also felt that Germany must pay reparations to France to cover the cost of rebuilding the parts of the country that had been destroyed during the war 750000 houses and 23000 factories had been demolished and France should be allowed to take possession of the Rhineland which would stop Germany from attacking them in the future The general attitude in Britain was that Germany should be greatly punished for the War Make Germany Pay and Squeeze
