Even though climate change is partially caused by the natural cycles of Earth humans are still a major part of it due to the rapid development of technology and economy Human activities such as burning fossil fuels are discharging large amounts of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere which makes the temperature increase and the air quality decrease in the last one centuryIn the speech The state of climate-and what we might do about it from Ted by Nicolas Stern filmed in September 2014 he tries to illustrate the situation and convinces his audience that climate change has become one of the most urgent global issues which needs all of us make efforts to stop this change in the next 100 year to make it becomes the best century instead of the worst The potential audience Nicolas tries to persuade is all humanity lives on this planet In order to make his speech more effective he uses four main strategies contrast statistics and example Following are the illustrations of these three main strategies Throughout his speech the using of contrast reinforced the effectiveness of his idea that environment changes with time because of wrong human decisions Nicolas points out two places he lived before and makes contract with the situations nowadays which makes audience realize how serious they should take towards climate change One of the contrasts he makes is his teaching experience in Beijing 25 years ago He feels it was safe and easy to ride bicycles all around Beijing 25years ago but today the air has been dangerously polluted because of the numerous coal and diesel burned it is hard for elderly to even go outside The other contrast speaker makes is his hometown London London used to be called the Smoke because of the pollution in 1952 A lot of bad things happened during that time but things have changed now London becomes a beautiful city once again due to the correct
