It is widely accepted that the earths climate is warming and that people are making a contribution to this warming However the magnitude of humans contribution and its long-term effect are not certain It is not a secret that we need to secure a cleaner and safer environment for future generations The big question is how should we go about achieving this goal The Kyoto Protocol has been proposed as a solution for the emission of greenhouse gases and is summarized as follows December 11 1997 Representatives of 150 nations participated in the UN conference on anthropogenic climate change The purpose of the conference was to reach an agreement on limiting global emission of greenhouse gases primarily carbon dioxide from the combustion of fossil fuels which may cause substantial climate warming with unpredictable but potentially devastating ecological and human consequences If the United States agreed to the terms of the protocol and signed on it is very probable that we would experience harsh economic problems In order for the United States to accept these problems as unavoidable and necessary the Kyoto Protocol would have to have undeniable proof of what exactly is causing global warming and proof of its capability of following through with what it set out to accomplish The bottom line is if the United States is going to climb on board the Kyoto Protocol must prove that long term goals will outweigh the short-term effects and that the protocol is the most effective way to achieve the desired goals On the face of things the accord sounds good by developing targets to lower emissions like the ones in the Kyoto Protocol humans would unite toward the longevity of the earth There are however weaknesses with the Kyoto Protocol and it is not worth the immense economic risk of sinking further into an already weak and damaged economy
