The Declining CommunityWith high expectations of experiencing the rich Asian culture I headed over to the International District The first thing I ran into was the Chinese Gate The beautiful colors and the magnificent size resembled the palace gates that I saw in my homeland South Korea As I walked along King Street to the east a park to my left caught my attention It is a park named Hing Hay Park that visually expressed the Chinese culture by art In the park there is a pavilion made in traditional Chinese architecture and a huge mural of the Chinese dragon However after the visual treat at the park I realized it was a misleading preview of what I expected for the whole district to be Besides the two or three blocks of the tour along King Street the unique Chinese culture was rarely observable The town was undeveloped and the physical and social environment was aged What I ran into was an impoverished communityAs I moved more into the heart of the town I passed by the chic Chinatown and started to see the conditions that are hidden from the tourists view I asked some friends that lived in Washington all their life to see if they know the boundaries of the International District Everyone thought the busy city looking area was the boundary and told me that they never saw the impoverished side of the community The first half of the community starting from the 5th avenue is visually appealing However when you compare it with the eastern side of the community and see how it has been neglected from care one might misconstrued that the west side is built only for commerce and looks but not for the pride and love of the culture Buildings and other structures are more outdated as you move east along King Street Most of them were dilapidating with age The town did not keep up with
