The cornerstone of the government is based on all citizens having a voice Our Founding Fathers put in place one of the greatest components of this Nation the power to vote This is such a beautiful freedom to possess Millions have fought and died over this now unappreciated and inconvenient part of our lives It is our civic duty to be an educated voter and we should exercise this right every time the ballots are open The polls have made us one of the greatest countries in the world but they could also be our greatest downfall The decline in citizens who even vote and the increase of ignorant voters are astounding and the effects can be detrimentalIt doesnt take long to understand the problem in having an uneducated society Walter Lippmann points out in Public Opinion that citizens are too preoccupied with the trials and tribulations of their personal lives to fully engage in the abstract political world Anthony Downs also states in An Economic Theory of Democracy that this ignorance is even rational given the high costs and low benefits of being informed Even though extra effort is required it is still of upmost importance to have a basic understanding of all parts of the Government and how they function together to form the big picture Once knowledge is acquired about the admiration as a whole then one can start to learn about candidates different views about issues and can effectively form an educated opinion about the subject When the presidential election came around talking to my fellow students concerning the candidates was frustrating The huge majority of them talked passionately about a subject but when I questioned why they viewed it this way all I heard was a lot of umms They soon admitted to only voting for a particular candidate because a friend told them to With people not learning the actual facts their opinions are based on little more than
