Ricardo Eliecer Neftal Reyes Basoalto or more famously known under the pseudonym Pablo Neruda was an iconic Chilean poet considered to be one of the most important figures in the foundation of Latin American literature He transitioned through several literary and political stages in his career his poetry celebrating many topics such as love nature and human experience While he was particularly known for contributing to the surrealist moment much of Nerudas poetry was strongly political Strongly affected by his experiences in the Spanish Civil war in the 1930s Neruda came to strongly appreciate the Soviet Union of Joseph Stalin He travelled through the Soviet Union and witnessed Hitlers rise to power and his sudden death He additionally opposed the US invasion of Cambodia and Vietnam and was also in Chile while General August Pincochet successfully carried out a coup on September 11 1973 against the elected Socialist president Salvador Allende Neruda was a witness to these events hence he used his poems as a means of chronicling these political events This sequence of poetry passionately details the benefits of a communist government while condemning the war he has experienced Therefore it can be shown that Nerudas political poetry contrasts strongly with his love poetry in terms of symbolism description and languageParticularly within the two poems Neruda uses symbolism to display two different strains of love love for his country and love for a past lover While the symbols occur recurrently throughout his poems Neruda uses them as a means of encompassing particular thoughts and memories that assist in instigating strong emotion from the reader Within I Explain a Few Things Neruda recurrently casts Spanish civilians in a heroic light thoroughly displaying the patriotism for his county This however is juxtaposed with his verbal vengeance of those responsible for bloodshed as seen in his use of bandits blood fire and jackals In I Explain A Few Things he describes the beauty of his country
