The characters of Horatio Rosencrantz and Guildenstern from Shakespeares Hamlet are distinctly diverse These characters are on opposite ends and differ from each other greatly To understand how they are so different the reader will have to examine these characters relationship with Hamlet their motives and what supporting characters think of them Horatio is Hamlets friend and confidant This is made apparent when Hamlet addresses Horatio by saying Sir my good friend 12163-165 An instance where their friendship is made known would be when Hamlet shares with Horatio all of his experiences and misgivings especially with his deceased father Hamlets lack of concern to revealing his feelings only goes to prove his confidence with Horatio and confirm the fact that the two are close friends To prove what a sincere and considerate person Horatio is one would have to recall the event where Horatio implores Hamlet not to meet up with the apparition What if it tempt you toward the flood my lord 1 2 69-77 He does this out of fear and consideration for Hamlets well being Horatio is a honest person who does not tell untruths with Hamlet Nothing proves this better then when Hamlet asks Horatio But what is your affair in Elsinore 1 2 174 and Horatio responds My lord I came to see your fathers funeral 1 2 176 Instead of lying to his friend as is the case with Rosencrantz and Gildenstern he simply tells him the truth Horatio has no ulterior motives he is just a caring individual who supplies Hamlet with an sympathetic ear He is a paradigm of friendship and can always be trusted to confer sensible counsel and an honest opinion On the other end of the spectrum rests Rosencrantz and Guildenstern These two are Hamlets childhood friends They are recruited by King Claudius to discover the cause of Hamlets madness but eventually end up spying of their own friend on the behalf of
