Differences in Responses to Raymond Carvers Popular Mechanics Raymond Carvers Popular Mechanics reveals the common effect of competition in todays relationships Competition is the act of competing It is also known as rivalry a contest or a match This is what I think Carver is trying to show us in his story Some people are so self-caring that they can never admit when they are wrong or that they have a problem This leads to rounds of fighting which result in a never-ending circle of problems This is true for everyone no matter how old you are what gender you are or the color of your skin No one likes to admit when they are wrong and some people will never admit it at all This is what Carver is trying to show us here How can two people love each other and then say and do the most horrible things to each other Carvers story is written about a couple that appear to be married My theory of competition ruining relationships is not only for the married couple but it is for all relationships in general It can be a relationship with a friend a parent a coach or anyone Lets say the couple in the story is married This is not going to change a thing He is still going to leave and they will still fight over the baby I think Carver is showing us that sometimes we care about ourselves so much that we will do anything to prove our point We want to be able to say we won the argument In this story it seems like the couple has a history of arguing The main characters know that this argument will be the last one They each want to go out with a bang Therefore the level of competition is very
