Archbishop Oscar Romero Peace is not the product of terror or fear Peace is not the silence of cemeteries Peace is not the silent result of violent repression Peace is the generous tranquil contribution of all to the good of all Peace is dynamism Peace is generosity It is right and it is dutyWorks Cited- 1 -Archbishop Oscar Romero Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdamez More commonly known as Archbishop Oscar Romero was one of the most influential voices in the fight for peace this century Romero faced incredible opposition which he was able to overcome and used the Church as a light of hope to challenge his oppressors On August 15 1917 the world was blessed with a young boy named Oscar Arnulfo Romeroy Galdamez He lived in Ciudad Barrios in San Miguel El Salvador At this time in history his town was under great oppression San Miguel was considered a National Security StateNSS A NSS is a place where the military is accountable to none and the people are defenseless against tyranny and oppressionno peace San Miguel was ravaged by poverty injustice and sorrow which Romero dedicated his life to end He brought hope and happiness to this poor repressed country in a time where none existed As a young boy Oscar was confused by the oppression of his country He couldnt quite understand this predicament He always knew that he wanted to make a change This is why he entered the priesthood at a fairly early age Romero worked his way up the religious ladder until he was appointed the Archbishop of El Salvador in 1977 at age sixty As Archbishop Romero immediately began to take action in his oppressed country In the late 1970s the Church in Central America was being contested by two contrasting ideologies those priests who wanted to maintain a stabilizing presence of non-confrontation in politics and those who believed it was their duty to speak out
