DH Lawrence Born in the Midland mining village of East-wood Nottinghamshire D H Lawrence was the son of a coal-miner His mother was a middle-class woman and school teacher She was much better educated than her husband and self-consciously genteel His parents led a bitter married life From an early age Lawrence was aware of the struggles between his parents and was much on his mothers side And the experience of his childhood had a deep influence upon his life After receiving education at local schools and at Nottingham University College Lawrence worked first as a clerk and then as an elementary school teacher 1902-1906 In the meantime he began to write and published literary works His first published work was a group of poems which appeared in the English Review for November 1909 and next February he published his first short story In 1912 he met Frieda bon Richthofen a German noblewoman and the wife of a professor at Nottingham University They helplessly fell in love eloped to Europe and got married to 1914 when Frieda was divorced by her husband In 1914-1918 Lawrences objection to World War I and his wifes German origin caused them a lot of trouble with the British authorities After the war they led a wandering life living briefly in Germany Austria Italy England France Australia New Zealand and American On March 2 1930 Lawrence died of tuberculosis in the south of France at the age of 44 Lawrence was a prolific writer His output of literature include poems stories novelettes
