Elementary Schools Drug of Choice Ritalin Is Ritalin being over-prescribed in American schools Ritalin is used to treat ADDADHD Attention Deficit Disorder Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder a psychological disorder When children take Ritalin their actions tend to be more goal oriented They become less aggressive less apt to get into trouble and more compliant They are better able to follow rules making them easier for adults to handle Parents and teachers are often pleased with changes they see in a child who has been placed on Ritalin However the drug usually does nothing to enhance learning or improve academic achievement over the long term Ritalin is a Schedule II Controlled Substance as are cocaine opiates and methamphetamine While parents and teachers are telling children about the dangers of drugs they are giving them Ritalin everyday Ritalin not only is in the same category as cocaine but also has similar effects Ritalin is highly addictive and children can develop a tolerance for the drug There are many side effects to Ritalin The most common and serious side effects are insomnia loss of appetite and changes in heart rate We are turning our children into zombies Many children that are taking Ritalin have not been properly diagnosed In most cases children are diagnosed as having ADHD by a family physician not a psychiatrist who makes the assumption that these children have a brain dysfunction These doctors rely on the word of the parents and teachers There is no true test medical or otherwise to diagnose ADHD So who gets diagnosed with ADHD Children who have difficulty following instructions paying attention andor blurt out answers Children are expected to sit still hour after hour and do what they are told This is both frustrating and unnatural The number of children placed on Ritalin has grown two and a half times since 1990 Dr Daniel Safer of John Hopkins University School of Medicine provided this fact Among todays
