An unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous likely to cause pain or a threat defines what most human beings know as fear The thing that is most threatening is not fear itself but the way a person will react to fear Fear may bring out the worst in people Whenever someone is confronted by fear he is willing to do whatever it takes to get away from that sense of fear Some people will manipulate a situation and even lie or throw someone else under the bus just so that they can have a better outcome Others are willing to stand up and face whatever is causing fear Many of the characters from Arthur Millers 1953 play The Crucible and Irwin Winklers movie Guilty by Suspicion show a lot of similarity in the way they react to fearJohn Proctor and David Merrill are two characters that really seem to show a great deal of similarity to each other in how they react to fear With the exception of the reputation he has acquired from the affair he had John Proctor is a character in The Crucible who is seen as a very powerful man with a good reputation in society Though John Proctor is seen as a well trusted man in society his wife still has very little faith in him The best example of this is when Elizabeth John Proctors wife is talking to John about going to the court and says If it were not Abigail that you must go to hurt would you falter Miller 51 Abigail is the girl that John had an affair with This brings up the first example of John Proctor and David Merrill being two characters that show a lot of similarity to each other David Merrill is a character from Guilty by Suspicion who has faults in his marriage The only difference between the two characters in the sense of
