The Normandy Invasion On June 6 1944 the Invasion of Normandy began Other names for this were D-Day and Operation Overlord Operation Overlord was the code name for the most popular command in the war This was the invasion force that was to cross the English Channel land in France and push on into Germany The Germans were holding their ground not backing down and the footholds for Allied armies were not nearly as good as they had expected Fortunately the powerful counterattack with which Hitler had said would throw the Allies off the beaches did not occur The Allied air dominance over northern France made it difficult for Rommel German field marshal to move his inadequate reserves Hitler became convinced that the Normandy landings were a trick and the main assault would come north of the Seine River He refused to release the divisions he had there and insisted on calling in reinforcements from other areas Beginning shortly after midnight the airborne troops began dropping into Normandy with the infantry coming in by landing craft at first light By nightfall on June 6 the Allies had most of their troops on the Normandy coast The greatest invasion in the history of war had worked By the end of June Eisenhower had 850000 men and 150000 vehicles ashore in Normandy The Italian operation was still progressing slowly but surely In December 1943 the combined chiefs of staff of the Allies selected Eisenhower to be the head of Operation Overlord The invasion was planned for the spring of 1944 British and American troops already gathering in England for the invasion outnumbered more than 50 divisions more than 150000 troops with thousands of bombers fighter planes and ships Eisenhower returned to London impressed with the significance of the task In that spirit Eisenhower worked both he and his troops relentlessly He worked 20 hours a day the men trained with live ammunition His
