Women Evolving Women today have come a long way by gaining equal rights Virginia Woolfs words It would have been impossible completely and entirely for any woman to have written the plays of Shakespeare in the age of Shakespeare 1 demonstrate womens rights of the past and present and how they have changed Around Shakespeares time girls were told to stay at home and mend the stockings or mind the stew and not to moon about books and paper Woolf 2 while the boys went to grammar school Today boys and girls are sent to school together Not only is schooling one example of how womens rights have changed in society but so is how women are treated by their parents In Shakespeares day women were forced to stay at home and marry whomever their parents chose Women had no say in the situation Woolf uses the sentence She cried out that marriage was hateful to her and for that she was severely beaten by her father 2 as an example of something that could have occurred between a father and a daughter that talked back to him In society today most women can make all of their own decisions Virginia Woolf uses several examples to show how a womans role has changed in society today Woolf bases these examples on historical evidence and her own personal experiences In writing Shakespeares Sister in 1929 Woolf could have experienced not having equal rights herself Written in a problem-solution organization this narrative essay describes the life and death of a mistreated fictional character named Judith Descriptive diction allows the reader to feel the awfulness of Judiths misfortune whereas the abstract and general diction Johnson 2 help the essay to appeal to the reader Not only does the syntax of the essay vary due to the sentence openers but due to the sentence and paragraph lengths as well
