Expansionism During the late 1800s and early 1900s the United States of America went through a period of expansion With thoughts of being the superior race Americans wanted to become the model country and have all others follow in their ways Several ripe and fertile areas of the world became their foreign targets Latin America the Philippines the Panama Canal and sections of Asia were areas much desired by Americans Transcontinental Trade with Asia Japan China and so forth was also desired for the advancement of America Prosperous trading posts and harbors meant more power and wealth for America As long as America kept advancing and setting new goals they were on the right track for making a successful country Starting in the late 1800s and ending in the beginning of the 1900s America worked to expand itself Through trade being a role model and by taking charge in foreign affairs America was able to advance as well as expand in size and stature Starting in 1867 America physically added onto its size The Secretary of State at the time William Seward bought Alaska from Russia This then lead to the purchase of a coaling station in Hawaii and paved the way for commercial trade with Korea Japan and China Americans believed that they were citizens of a The perfect society They believed that they should be role models for the rest of the world allowing other countries to advance by following in their footsteps They felt that they were a City on a Hill as Winthrop said They desired to be role models to the world They wanted to be the dominating country Persons such as Seward dreamed of possession of the entire North and Central American continental and ultimately control over the world An example of expansion happened on the islands of Hawaii Prior to being annexed as a state Hawaii was its own country run by a monarch Queen Liliuokalani
