Saint Ian Anne Tyler was described by The Washington Post Book World as being a master at capturing the evolution of families over time This was clearly evident throughout Saint Maybe Ian Agatha Thomas Daphne all grew and changed very much over the course of their lives When we first met Ian he was a teenager growing up with his entire life to live in front of him He was enjoying his life he had a very attractive girlfriend that he messed around with a lot he got into college just barely and he had a large family around him that loved and cared for him After Dannys death whether it was Ians fault of not Ians life changed drastically His family now needed him to be home and help around the house with the three young children because Ians parents were getting old and achy Dropping out of college altogether and getting a job signified Ians development into an adult a young adult Ian went from being an older brother figure to the children to instantly becoming a father figure Ian assumed his role as a father to the children until all three of them were out of school and grown up Once all of the children were grown up and out on their own Ian finally got to pick up his life where it was interrupted some twenty-five years prior After a few attempts by the now grown up children to try and hook Ian up with various people Ian seemingly out of nowhere announced that he wanted to marry Rita The novel ends with Rita giving birth to her and Ians first child and the beginning of Ians own family Agatha was the oldest of the children during the deaths of her mother and stepfather so she had the most comprehensible idea of what was going on At first she didnt accept Ians generous hospitality
