When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005 African Americans and the poor people were the most that suffered the devastation due to the fact that they lived in the sections of the lower city and closer to floodings Hurricane katrina has been one of the most devastating natural disaster to hit US ever costing a total of 125 billion dollars and about 1000 dead people All natural disasters cannot be prevented but they can be prepared for As humans we blame someone for the number of deaths and the failure of an appropriate emergency response for this reason this essay will explore the poor response that emerged from a failure of a number of risk factors The government response seemed unable to give basic protection from the devastation of nature and some of the factors that provoked the tragedy were the organizational status of FEMA as an agency the communicational problems with the State Governor and George W Bush ineffectiveThe risks of Katrina hitting New Orleans had been considered with enough warnings of the threat even days earlier it happened However those who were in charge to take care of the situation failed within the appropriate opportunity to avoid the disaster There were many mistakes that were made by the federal agency during the Katrina disaster Although the Federal Emergency Management Agency FEMA was an independent agency that had its own budget with liberties but it had been weakened during the Bush administration Itself the agency suffered before the hurricane hit US because its size was reduced FEMA became part of the Department of Homeland Security DHS who was an agency dedicated to terrorist attacks This factor made the FEMA response more difficult due to the fact that they could not decide by their own they had to ask the DHS leader to make decisions Moreover the DHS had different priorities that had nothing to do with FEMA
