In Robert Craiss The First Rule Crais leaves readers questioningtheir morals as he weaves a tale of revenge and vigilantism Crais usesthe characters of Rina Markovic and Joe Pike to show different ways inwhich power can be strategically exercised to reach their own goalsThese characters follow a unique set of morals that is different thanthe average persons however in this paper I will define how each moralcode and character fits under a good or bad label that we as asociety have formed I will examine the use of each character as symbolsby Robert Crais and how these symbols are used to execute power Then Iwill determine three lessons in power that Crais teaches through thesituations he places the characters inFrank Meyer had done the nearly impossible he had gotten out of thebusiness and created a new life with a beautiful family Robert Craisbegins his book with the destruction of this family as their deathsspark an investigation by the Los Angeles Police Alcohol Tobacco andFirearms Agents and Joe Pike Joe Pike knows Meyer from their days asprofessional mercenaries and the red arrows that are tattooed on theirshoulders show their mutual respect A mutual respect and admirationthat ignited a plan for revenge and search for the truth as Pike worksto bring Meyers family to justice and clear his name with the ATFagents Pike has developed a moral code through his work as a mercenary andmilitary contractor His training and personality has allowed him toaccept acts of physical violence as a necessity and as a part of justiceand has trained him remove his personal feelings to make logical plansand assumptions However his training has also given him the skills toprotect the innocent and to determine who the innocent are Crais usesPike as an abnormal symbol of good forcing the readers to set aside hisuse of physical violence to champion his role as a vigilante redefiningthe label of good Traditionally the term good does not includemurdering and torturing
