Topics Of Death Sushanth Beesam The seventeenth century was a time of turmoil when plagues wars overpopulation and religious persecution reigned over the land of Europe All of these circumstances produced a short life span for the people of Europe at that time To escape those situations temporarily many people embraced the idea of Carpe Diem which means to seize the day Meaning you do something out of the ordinary or unusual because you might not get another chance to experience that moment of situation Some of the Authors that wrote about this idea were Robert Herrick and Andrew Marvell The poems they wrote were To His Coy Mistress and To the Virgins Make Much Of Time Both of these poets symbolically convey the theme of Carpe Diem Marvell and Herrick delve into the topic of death in their poems in an attempt to convey the theme of Carpe Diem Marvell discusses his urgency of overcoming death and symbolically utilizes time But at my back I always hear Times winged chariot hurrying near And yonder all before us lie Deserts of vast eternity Marvell 21-24 That is the poet says that he can feel getting older and their time could come any time and them there wont be anything else The winged chariot that Marvell refers to expresses signifies that death is close at hand Therefore he wants his coy mistress to make love and not be shy Thereby they will both enjoy life and cheat death Herrick also discusses death but he stresses the quickness of times passage Sushanth Beesam That age is best which is the first When youth and blood are warmer But being spent the worse and worst Times still succeed the
