Seemingly complex because of its uniqueness Lennie and George actually share a quite simple friendship Leading the lonesome existence of migrant farmers they both just long for the love nourishment and company of another human But because of the burdensome nature of Lennie this special bond is shortlived Though they communicate and live much as brothers would Lennie plays more of a son role to George Desperate for guidance he is basically kept alive by George He turns to George for work shelter food and companionship Ironically it seems unlikely that the very man who supplies Lennie with life is the very man to take Lennies life away George also protects Lennie though Fathering him throughout their struggles to find work he puts himself in a dangerous situation by bringing along Lennie Unpredictable and easily distracted Lennie is a bomb awaiting explosion Because George is able to maintain steady work for Lennie and constantly defends him Lennie receives a sense of security from his relationship with George He is calmed by the knowledge that George tends to his needs and has plans for the future that include him Also George is a constant role-model for Lennie Obviously Lennie emulates George because he often imitates his motions and words Blabbering on and on to those who will listen such as Crooks and Candys wife he constantly speaks highly of George He relies on George much as a child relies on a parent Still amidst all the turmoil both men depend on each other And though George is not one to wear emotions on his sleeve his emotional survival equally relies on Lennie as much as Lennies physical survival relies on George He claims life would be less stressful and more carefree if Lennie were not constantly at his heels but he thrives on his role in Lennies life He wants to feel important He wants to be needed He needs to be wanted Like those even
