In the last 80 years the earths temperature has risen over half a degree That may not sound much by if you consider that if the temperature rises 4 degrees the global sea level will rise to 5m higher than it is today causing hundreds of coastal cities to be completely under water This is caused partly by the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere The Greenhouse Effect The Sahara desert is increasing its area by 150 hectares every year This is caused by over logging and not regenerating the forests turning them into deserts The ozone layer has been depleted 30 over Antarctica in the last 25 years due to the build up of CFCs from air-conditioners and aerosols Having considered some of the ways that humanity is destroying its inheritance we can look more closely at the idea of overpopulation All too often overpopulation is thought of as simply as crowding too many people in a given area too high a population density If all the people from China and India lived in the continent of US excluding Alaska it still would have a smaller population density than England Holland or Belgium So what Density is generally irrelevant to overpopulation For instance if you only took into consideration density you would have to accept that Africa was under populated because it has only 55 people per square mile while Europe has 261 and Japan has 857 A more reasonable measure would take into account that over half of Africas area is covered by desert or impenetrable forest making its effective population density more like 117 people per square mile That is still only about a fifth of that of the United Kingdom Even by the year 2020 Africas effective density is projected to grow only to that of France today and few people consider France excessively crowded or overpopulated When people think of crowded countries they
