The Health of the General Public as the Priority When Importing Exotic Animals

This is an essay about animal trading. The author details how countries with higher Human Development Indexes (HDI) import expensive animals while countries with low HDI export them. The author also discusses how deforestation negatively impacts animals, making them more susceptible to capture. High rates of deforestation are occurring in Indonesia, Australia, and Botswana. Next, the author mentions that ivory, tiger bones, and exotic cats are the most traded animal products. Tiger bones are used for medicine and food delicacies in China, Taiwan, and Japan. Last, the author writes about diseases, such as monkeypox and SARS, brought to the United States through exotic animal trading. Despite this public health concern, since exotic animal trading is such a money-making industry, it is challenging to end it.
