Understanding Islam as a religion is essential to understanding Islamic fundamentalism Islam is estimated to be the worlds second largest religion This is in terms of numbers It is also by far the fastest growing of all the major religions The word Islam if it were translated into English from Arabic would be submission Fregosi Submission means to submit to the will of God Allah and His Word as it was first revealed to Muhammad in the Quran What is Islamic Fundamentalism Is it a term and a movement that Americans need to fear The founder of Islam Muhammad was believed to have lived in Mecca which is a city in present day Saudi Arabia some 1400 years ago Muhammad was believed to be a merchant and a trader According to the Islamic belief Muhammad was revealed Gods Word orally and it was only until after his death that it was written down into book form This book that it was written into was The Quran The community of Islamic believers the umma has grown from a faith in one Arabian city into what is now a worldwide religion In a stretch of countries from the Atlantic coast of Africa to many parts of the far-east Muslims either are a majority or make up a large part of society Many people of the Islamic faith from the Middle East and from northern Africa have immigrated to European countries in search of employment In fact enough Muslims have migrated to Germany France Britain and Switzerland that these countries now have a large number of Muslims There are certain basic requirements or commandments usually called the Five Pillars of Faith because they support the House of Islam which is how many Muslims refer to their religion These requirements are The confession of faith itself which is summed up In the statement I testify that there is no God but God
