Europe around 1600 was a place of religious controversy a power struggle between monarchs and emperors and a wave of new ideas inhibited by the Dark ages The possibility of wealth enticed many men in coastal towns in centuries prior to 1600 to explore new ways to get to Asia This incentive of wealth led to the development of better boat making compasses and emphasis on mapmaking and many more advancements in technologies in a way to aid in their exploration Stories and myths of strange lands and strange people peaked European interests and these further increased desire to expand and explore places never seen These ideas culminated into the discovery of the new world and its inhabitants What is most interesting is the European view of these new Native Americans but the important aspect is how these views changedimpacted policy and why the European perspective of Native Americans is altersPre-1492 there were huge misunderstandings of the world in many ways Europeans grossly underestimated the size earth and once Columbus discovered the New World it sparked a sense of fear The general lack of information of new lands caused minds to wonder and imaginations to flair Since people were so curiousignorant to foreign lands many simply fictionalized what they did not understand Tales of Amazonians creatures with their heads located on their chests blemmyes and monsters in the New World were rampant in the English population These ideas were only further enforced by early travel writings by people that usually didnt even venture to the Americas Levinus Hulsius is an example of these second-hand travel narratives that portrait these creatures In his pamphlets he leaves no doubt that these creatures existed in these exotic new lands Writers like Hulsius were detrimental to the natives because if people think cannibalistic creatures as described exist they will have no issue in wiping out the populations These reports were fantasies that infiltrated European mindset and many set out
