The two most notable conquests of the Spanish in the Americas were those of the Aztecs and Incas The Spanish looted fabulous hordes of gold and silver after these conquests This made them long for more valuable goods So they ventured north where they were reluctant to colonize because of the lack of precious metals It wasnt until after the Spanish felt forced by the English Dutch French and Russians were they open to colonization The Spanish set up the first white settlement within the United States at St Augustine to prevent foreign advancement The Spanish settlements of New Mexico Santa Fe San Diego and San Antonio were soon to follow In all of the settlements the rule of the Spanish king was supreme He appointed all government officials aristocratically This of course was to protect the best interests of Spain French exploration of America began with small fishing and fur trading expeditions As fur trading grew more appealing more and more trips were being made The French explorer Jacques Cartier explored the lower reaches of the St Lawrence River and gave France claim to Canada Exploration was extended by traders and missionaries into the interior of the United States through the Great Lakes and Mississippi River System The French claimed vast areas throughout the Americas Missions trading posts and agricultural settlements were founded The Dutch found their way to America through a hired Englishman named Henry Hudson He was employed to explore the East Coast from Virginia to New Foundland Consequently fur trading began with Native Americans and the Dutch West Indian Company founded New Amsterdam on the Hudson River The Dutch expanded as Far East as the Connecticut River and they captured settlements founded by the Swedish in the South
