Arriving in the New World in the year of 1620 were the Pilgrims Led by William Bradford John Carver and Miles Standish the Pilgrims found survival to be very difficult During their first winter in this new place nearly half of them died The production of food shelter and clothing were the main difficulties that these people faced On March 16 1621 an Indian named Squanto entered the Pilgrim village With the help of Squanto the Pilgrims were able to survive and succeed in their colonization efforts Squanto was born into the Patuxet Indian tribe in the area of what would later become known of as Plymoth Unfortunately his date of birth is unknown In this tribe Squanto learned many useful skills He learned how to hunt for food and clothing grow crops and build living places These skills would become quite useful to Squanto as he would later assist the Pilgrims in their survival In 1605 the white men on a trading expedition encountered Squanto whom they befriended The men invited Squanto to spend time with them In doing so Squanto learned their language helped in their relations with other Indians and was asked to travel with them to England In England he lived with a family who formally taught him their language showed him their lifestyle and displayed him to other Englishmen It wasnt long before Squanto began his journey back to America with Captain John Smith Upon their arrival Squanto helped Smith by introducing him to Indian tribes in the area In doing so He was able to journey back to his original home However due to an encounter with the horrific captain Hunt Squanto did not reach his home for and additional five years When Squanto finally reached the place of his family and friends he discovered that a terrible inscident had occurred a Great Sickness had inflicted his tribe Everyone was dead except for Squanto With no one
